Shares of Linde fell on Thursday after the industrial gas giant reported mixed first-quarter results and its guidance left some investors wanting more. We're not sure of the rationale for excluding it but that explains why we're not fretting about Linde's lack of guidance raise. Guidance For the second quarter, Linde projects adjusted EPS between $3.70 and $3.80, which implies 5% to 7% year-over-year growth, excluding currency impacts. As always with Linde, the midpoint of the guidance assumes no economic improvement. Enter the closed-end fund, a relative of the traditional, open-end mutual fund. Gundlach highlighted closed-end funds on CNBC's " Closing Bell " Wednesday afternoon, noting that it's "a pretty good environment for moderate risk assets." "For retail investors, closed-end funds have gone back to trading at discounts broadly, and with some leverage involved there, there's double-digit yields available without taking a ton of credit risk," he said. Searching for discounts Drivers of these closed-end fund discounts, particularly those that hold bonds, include sharp spikes in yields. The Abrdn National Municipal Income Fund (VFL) , for instance, is trading at a 15% discount to its net asset value, according to Nuveen's CEF Connect, a database of closed-end funds.

Alphabet also announced $70 billion in share buybacks and its first-ever dividend of 20 cents a share , payable in June. Looking for the next dividend payer When scanning the universe for dividend payers, Gaffney has three buckets. "They sustain a level of dividend income back to investors over numerous cycles," he said. This includes names that have strong growth prospects, high margins and high returns on capital. "What that means is they generate free cash flow, and that can drive a strong dividend growth rate for that business," Gaffney said.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell met with the press after the March Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, which was pretty fraught. Data centers If there is the whiff of a data center or anything in one, the stock goes higher. It's why Meta stock is a buy a tad lower as stocks tend to revisit those kinds of declines. Student demonstrators occupy the pro-Palestinian "Gaza Solidarity Encampment" on the West Lawn of Columbia University on April 24, 2024 in New York City. The Columbia protesters are also calling for the university to “disclose and sever all ties” with the New York Police Department. For example, Columbia protesters want the university to sever ties with the school’s center in Tel Aviv and a dual degree program with Tel Aviv University. New York University protesters use the school’s Tel Aviv center as a rallying cry as well.

The rise in power demand for data centers — which are booming from the need to support a new world of AI technologies — is also fueling demand for the providers of data center parts. "Expected power usage for U.S. data centers under construction is equivalent to more than 50% of the power currently used by U.S. data centers. Several years out, even after these data centers are constructed, some expect data center power consumption to double again," analyst Thomas Thornton wrote in a Wednesday note. Management is raising its own capital expenditures for the first time in a decade to meet the power demand for data centers, BofA added. To be sure, analysts mentioned that data center demand will likely exceed supply.

It called this strategy "The AI trade after the trade" and identified 50 stocks that could fall under this category. It takes massive data centers to train and distribute LLMs for public use. An April 17 note from Bank of America led by Thomas Thornton, the head of research marketing, estimates that data centers under construction will initially increase power usage from these facilities by 50%. For the electrical and thermal equipment needed to run data centers, investors can look to Vertiv (VRT), according to Andrew Obin, a research analyst at Bank of America. As demand for data centers grows, these companies are experiencing increased pricing power, according to research analyst David W. Barden.

Now, private equity firms are swooping in to help while taking majority stakes in exchange. Last week, the company announced that it would partner with California-based private equity firm Nexus Capital Management and move its test into a for-profit company. A company owned by private equity can obfuscate what the company actually does to the public and potentially to regulators. Private equity firms “come into industries that are already suffering from a lack of funding,” said Creeks. They’ve had a lack of funding and support and so sometimes private equity is the only viable option.

Eaton and DuPont are both unconventional AI plays, as the data center market grows to meet the demands of the generative AI boom. Wells Fargo Investment Institute last month described rising data center demand as having positive "trickle-down effects" on the industrial sector. WFII wrote that spending from Big Tech firms into data centers, in particular, creates "meaningful downstream impacts" for industrial companies. Amazon Web Services is reportedly investing nearly $150 billion in data centers within the next 15 years to support AI efforts. During a Barclays investor conference in February, CFO Lori Koch said DuPont's data center and AI exposure will help boost the company's electronics business.

Data centers house vast amounts of computing power needed for AI workloads, and that need is set to grow as many tech companies are rapidly developing infrastructure for artificial intelligence. The bank named three stocks to play the trend: U.S.-listed power management firm Eaton , French energy tech firm Schneider Electric and U.S. power tech firm Cummins . It says Eaton is the key U.S. play on data centers, with 14% exposure and "broad favourable trends" in electrification, while Cummins has "favourable backup power exposure" to data centers. UBS gave Eaton a price target of $330, representing marginal downside. It gave the stock a price target of 250 euros ($270), or around 20% potential upside.
